I use a Canon G-9 camera and was anxious to read this book because Rick Sammon used a Canon G-10 as his “compact camera”. Although his intent at first seemed to be that of demonstrating how a compact camera can be just as good as a DSLR in most photography, he continually hints at the superiority of the latter. The book is primarily on how to take good photographs and how to use the various features that most compact and DSLR cameras have. I’m sorry Rick, but I’ve read these “hints & tips” hundreds of times in various “beginner” books. OK, so you used a compact camera to take a lot of the pictures in this book…that being your “confession” (nice title). However, you do not explain how your use of the compact camera makes for photographs equal to those of a DSLR, which is what I was hoping for! There also were a few typos and grammatical errors in the book and a bit too much of his son, Marco.

If one wants to “feel good” about using a compact camera vs splurging for a DSLR, just go out and use your camera…don’t buy this book to justify your equipment.

I can finally feel proud to be using my Canon G-10 thanks to Rick Sammon’s book Confessions of a Compact Camera Shooter. So many of my Photo friends have very large professional cameras and I come with my compact cmera. I have been so pleased with the results and have won severall ribbons with the photos taken with it.

Rick Samons has included many photos in the book to illistrate his points as well as giving some wonderful hints along the way which are helpful to both new and more experienced photographers.

He covers a very wide range of subject such as Light, ISO, raw vs. JPG, white balance and so much more. I really like this book!

I really wanted to like this book. It looks great and there are tons of example pictures that look like they would be really helpful. But I could not get over the poor organization and lack of detail/depth.

Tips and subjects are so poorly organized I found myself continually looking back to see if there was supposed to be some sort or organization strategy. I couldn’t find one and it was puzzling. I thought maybe this was an early draft. When the author gets to a good topic, he stops short of giving enough details and technical instruction to make it useful. I feel there was too much comparison back and forth between the compact digital camera and the digital SLR. I thought the point of the book should of been how to best use the compact camera.

In the end, I found this book to be more of an introduction to photography topics with an emphasis on compact digital cameras.

A different book that I found to be very useful on this subject is: David Pogue’s Digital Photography: The Missing Manual

  4. I really expected to learn more from this book. The content was not very helpful in regards learning about using a point and shoot. It was more about how great the author is!

I got this book because I have a point and shoot camera, which to me is the same as a compact camera. But it wasn’t until I got the book that I learned that the two are not the same. Not the author’s fault, but it was hard to tell from the book’s description. Most of the information in this book is very good, but the organization and flow is utterly confusing and some of the information is repeated over and over, which is something that I find distracting. There is no doubt that the author is a real pro, and he offers up lots of good advice and insight. But the organization alone detracts from this book’s usefulness, at least in this reader’s opinion.
